Office of Nutrition Services

Nutrition Surveillance

The Office of Nutrition Services participates in two Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) projects related to nutrition surveillance.  These projects are the Pregnancy Nutrition Surveillance System (PNSS) and Pediatric Nutrition Surveillance System (PedNSS).   In West Virginia, all information in these surveillance systems is collected via the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC).

These two surveillance systems:

Monitor behavioral and nutrition risk factors related to infant mortality, low birth weight, and children's health and growth among WV WIC participants.

Require the collection of selected data during WIC health screens.

  • Sociodemographic data
  • Anemia
  • Height and weight
  • Prematurity and birth weight
  • Pregnancy weight gain
  • Length of prenatal care
  • Breastfeeding initiation and duration
  • Tobacco and alcohol consumption
  • Provide data to track risk factors, target interventions and assess program effectiveness.

  • Report information to CDC for state analysis and inclusion in national surveillance.
