- One-third of young women become pregnant at least once before they reach the age of 20 – about 820,000 a year.
- The U.S. has the highest rates of teen pregnancy and births in the industrialized world.
- Teen pregnancy costs the United States at least $7 billion annually.
- Two-thirds of sexually experienced teens—both boys and girls—wish they had waited.
- Eight of ten teen fathers do not marry the teen mothers of their children.
- Two thirds of teen mothers never finish high school. Teen mothers are more likely to end up on welfare than are women who have children later.
- Eeverybody is NOT doing it. The proportion of high school teens who have had sex declined 14% between 1991 and 2003. Currently slightly less than half of high school teens say they have had sex.
- Most teens (87%) say that it would be much easier for them to delay sexual activity and avoid teen pregnancy if they had more open, honest conversations about sex with their parents.
