WISEWOMAN Program History

1993: Congress
authorizes the CDC to establish WISEWOMAN as part of the
services women receive from the National Breast and
Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP). |

1995: CDC funds
the first 3 state/tribal health agencies to provide
WISEWOMAN. |
 |
2003: West
Virginia WISEWOMAN is funded as a research project. The
West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (WVDHHR)
works with the West Virginia University School of
Nursing to develop the lifestyle intervention.

2008: The CDC
releases a 5-year funding cycle for WISEWOMAN. West
Virginia applies for and receives the cooperative
agreement. West Virginia WISEWOMAN becomes integrated
with WVBCCSP.

2009: West
Virginia begins providing WISEWOMAN cardiovascular
health screenings for eligible women.
