First Impressions
We can learn quite a great deal in just a few short seconds of meeting someone. In
the first seven seconds of contact, a person can make eleven impressions about you
and the WVBTT system: cleanliness, attractiveness, knowledgeable, responsiveness,
friendliness, credibility, helpfulness, empathy, courtesy, professionalism, and
confidence. A family will begin to assess you the moment you arrive at their door.
It is important to recognize the first contacts WV Birth to Three has with a family are
critical in setting the stage for a successful experience in the Part C system. Research
suggests a negative first impression is difficult to change. Studies show it can take
seven or eight subsequent visits to modify a negative first impression.
Think about a negative first experience you’ve had with someone. How long did it take
you to change your viewpoint? Or have you changed it yet? First impressions are
very powerful!
Home visitation safety is equally important. We have put together tips on personal
safety so your home visit will be a success for you and your family.
