HealthCheck Program

What is HealthCheck?

HealthCheck is the name of West Virginia's Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment Program (E.P.S.D.T.). It is a mandated Medicaid Program enacted in 1967 to ensure that Medicaid-eligible children under age 21 receive a comprehensive range of preventive and primary health services.

This program provides periodic, comprehensive health examinations; vision, dental and hearing assessments; immunizations; and treatment follow-up of conditions found through the health examination.

Who is eligible?

Children birth through 20 years of age who have an active Medicaid card.

Services Provided

Initial and periodic health check-ups including, but not limited to, the following:

  • physical examination

  • dental, hearing and vision testing

  • immunizations

  • laboratory testing, including blood lead

  • developmental assessment

  • medical history

  • referral for further diagnostic and treatment services.

How can a child receive HealthCheck?

All children, ages 0 to 21, who have an active Medicaid card are eligible for HealthCheck services.

All new Medicaid card holders are contacted to encourage their participation in HealthCheck services. Staff of the Office of Maternal and Child Health (OMCFH) are available to explain program benefits and to help select a local provider.

After an initial examination, children are scheduled for periodic comprehensive examinations by their HealthCheck provider.
