West Virginia Vital Statistics - 2002Cover Photo Glade
Creek Gristmill The Glade Creek Gristmill at Babcock State Park is one of the most photographed scenes in West Virginia. Pictures of the mill have appeared in numerous state and national publications and calendars. The mill was constructed on the site from parts of several mills after the park was established. Though it is a functioning mill, the water has to be pumped up from the stream level to the trough feeding the overshot mill wheel. Overshot wheel mills like Glade Creek generally would have been fed from a dam placed across the stream to raise the water to a sufficient level to flow over the wheel, or by diverting water from a stream at a higher elevation. The Augusta Heritage Site has photos of other West Virginia mills.
