I. Call to Order
and Introductions
Doug Godfrey called
the meeting to order at 1:10 p.m.
II. Approval of
Minutes
The minutes from the June 23 meeting were reviewed. John Knisely requested
that item XII be amended to state that the Commission would sponsor an
activity at WVAD. Barb King made the motion to accept the minutes with the
amendment, JD Corbin seconded. Motion approved.
III. Executive
Director’s Report
Deanna Stone reported that she has been working with DHHR to get the
interpreter rules promulgated. She had a meeting with John Law and Emily
Hopta on August 11. The first draft is finished. She is working on a
second draft and that will also go to the board for review.
IV. Appointments
to the Board
Emily Hopta reported that she has received no updates on the progress of the
appointments and the reappointments from the Governor.
V. Election of
the Chair
The Commission is due to elect a new chair; however, that person should be
either a deaf or hard of hearing person. The members are all due for
reappointment. John Knisely made the motion that the board elect Doug
Godfrey the chair of the board pro-tem. Pierre Sevigny seconded. Motion
approved.
VI. West Virginia
State Fair
Deanna reported that
the Commission will staff the DHHR booth on August 20, 2005. Anyone is
welcome to come and help.
VII. Registry of
Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Conference Report
Roy Forman shared about his trip to the RID Conference in San Antonio, Texas
in July. He said it was a wonderful conference and thanked the board for
allowing him to attend.
VIII. WVAD
Conference Report
Deanna reported on the WVAD Conference. The Commission sponsored a
reception on Friday night. There were around 120 people registered. It was
a good conference. The entertainment was good. Holly Palmer is the new
Miss Deaf WV.

IX. Fall
Workshops
Deanna reported on the workshops that are scheduled for the fall. They
include:
Mental
Health Workshop with Steven Hardy-Braz
Deaf
Idioms with Robyn Evans
Fingerspelling with Ressie Brown
Gender
Interpreting with Molly Simonton
PUBLIC COMMENTS
Pierre Sevigny said
that he will be attending the Deaf Senior Citizens Conference in San
Francisco.
Doug Godfrey
reminded the board that it has been two years since Deanna Stone was hired
as Executive Director. He wanted to commend her for the wonderful job that
she is doing.
Deanna said that the
retreat will be re-scheduled after the new board appointments and
reappointments have been made.
Pierre Sevigny made
the motion and Barb King seconded to adjourn the meeting. Meeting adjourned
at 2:05 p.m. |
