NEW BUSINESS

VIII. Fairmont State Community and Technical College Sign Language Interpreters Program

Ruby Losh gave a presentation on the changes that will be made to the ASL Communication Program. Ruby is trying to encourage FSU to create a four-year degree program for interpreters. Barbara King made a motion that the Commission write a letter to FSU encouraging them to add a few more core courses to the program to make it a full degree. Emily Hopta seconded. Motion passed.

XI. Retreat

The retreat will be June 23-24 at Romney. Deanna will put together an agenda.

OTHER BUSINESS

Pierre Sevigny brought a concern about the Wal-Mart in Beckley. Several deaf have applied and have not been hired. Deanna encouraged him to tell the people to contact West Virginia Advocates who will provide a lawyer, if necessary, and will work with the Human Rights Commission.

Pierre also is concerned that people are not aware of the videophones. Is that something the Commission can work on getting the word out? Roy Forman will work on it.

Nominations: The Commission has one opening for a deaf individual. Interested people must apply for themselves. The form is available online at the WVCDHH website.

PUBLIC COMMENTS

Ruby Losh will be attending the Deaf Women’s Unity conference in Elliott City, Maryland. She is hoping to get a chapter started in West Virginia.

Doug Godfrey would like to publicly recognize Deanna Stone for the outstanding job she is doing as Director of the Commission.

Pierre Sevigny made the motion to adjourn the meeting. JD Corbin seconded. The motion was unanimously approved. The meeting adjourned at 2:50 p.m.
