Agenda I. Call to Order and Introductions Doug Godfrey called the meeting to order at 1:13 p.m. II. Approval of Minutes Pat Moss made the motion and Mike Sullivan seconded that the minutes from the August 12, 2004 meeting be approved with the following amendment: "Annette Carey requested that part of Section X be revised." Motion approved. III. Executive Director’s Report Deanna Stone directed the board’s attention to her written report. OLD BUSINESS IV. State Fair Roy Forman reported that on August 21, 2004 the Commission was represented at the WV State Fair. Roy Forman, Kari Preslar, Doug Godfrey, Pierre Sevigny, Jimmy Harrison and former board member Delores Pyles staffed the booth. A total of 607 people stopped for information. V. Workshops Roy Forman reported on the workshops the Commission has sponsored and upcoming workshops. VI. RID-WV Deanna Stone reported that there are enough people registered with RID to start a West Virginia chapter. Ruby Losh is the interim chair until officers are elected. VII. Information Day with VRID, PCRID, and PARID Deanna reported that this was a very positive day. It was held in Romney on October 23. NEW BUSINESS VIII. Fairmont State Community and Technical College Sign Language Interpreters Program Ruby Losh gave a presentation on the changes that will be made to the ASL Communication Program. Ruby is trying to encourage FSU to create a four-year degree program for interpreters. Barbara King made a motion that the Commission write a letter to FSU encouraging them to add a few more core courses to the program to make it a full degree. Emily Hopta seconded. Motion passed. IX. Annual Report Deanna reported that the 2004 Annual Report is finished. X. PERD Michael Keeney and John Sylvia are continuing a review of the Commission. XI. Retreat The retreat will be June 23-24 at Romney. Deanna will put together an agenda. OTHER BUSINESS Pierre Sevigny brought a concern about the Wal-Mart in Beckley. Several deaf have applied and have not been hired. Deanna encouraged him to tell the people to contact West Virginia Advocates who will provide a lawyer, if necessary, and will work with the Human Rights Commission. Pierre also is concerned that people are not aware of the videophones. Is that something the Commission can work on getting the word out? Roy Forman will work on it. Nominations: The Commission has one opening for a deaf individual. Interested people must apply for themselves. The form is available online at the WVCDHH website. PUBLIC COMMENTS Ruby Losh will be attending the Deaf Women’s Unity conference in Elliott City, Maryland. She is hoping to get a chapter started in West Virginia. Doug Godfrey would like to publicly recognize Deanna Stone for the outstanding job she is doing as Director of the Commission. Pierre Sevigny made the motion to adjourn the meeting. JD Corbin seconded. The motion was unanimously approved. The meeting adjourned at 2:50 p.m. |
