Volunteer Services

The need for volunteer services at William R. Sharpe, Jr. Hospital is based upon the recognition that patients in psychiatric facilities have fundamental human requirements, which include a sense of belonging and interpersonal relationships to help achieve a state of well being. Volunteers make an important contribution toward fulfillment of these needs.

The Volunteer Services Department is a vital link between the facility and the community. Volunteers help patients expand their sense of self-worth and self-esteem, providing a sense of normalization. Because volunteers make a valuable contribution to the quality of patient care, we strive to place individuals in positions best suited to their interests, abilities, and experience. Areas for volunteering include the Gift Shop, Patient Library, Recreation, and Special Patient Activities.

Caring continues to be the most important service that volunteers perform. Through volunteering, you demonstrate concern for your fellow persons in a positive way by giving of your time and services.

For more information, contact the Volunteer Director at (304) 269-1210 Extension 371.
