Family Services
The Family Education Program is a division of Clinical Services at Sharpe Hospital . The program helps families to develop and enhance skills and knowledge that can assist them in helping a loved one recovering from mental illness.
The program goals are to:
Help families understand mental illness
Increase communication between families, patients and staff
Provide and link families to resources and education that best meet family needs
Help families and staff identify specific family needs
Help families ability to cope with mental illness
Mental Illness is a Medical Illness
Like diabetes or cancer, mental illness is no one's "fault." It appears to be caused by certain environmental influences and by imbalances of chemicals in the brain. Stress, heredity, medical illnesses, and physical injury to the brain are also thought to be factors in causing mental disorders.
