What does a Sanitarian do?

State Board of Sanitarians

Pursuant to West Virginia State Code, Chapter 30, Article 17, the State Board of Sanitarians began registering Sanitarians in West Virginia on July 1, 1992.  The Board is made up of seven members, four currently employed as a Registered Sanitarian, one currently employed as a Sanitarian, and two citizen members not employed as a Sanitarian.  Each of these members is appointed by the Governor and serves a five year term.  Each year the members select from among themselves a Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson.

2013 State Board of Sanitarians Board Members

The duties of the Board include reviewing candidates' applications for registration to ensure that they meet the appropriate educational and experience requirements.  In order to obtain a new or renewal Registration, an applicant must complete an application which includes a Child Support Obligation Disclosure form (available below) in accordance with West Virginia Code 48-15-303.  Additionally, the Board reviews training classes and meeting agendas to determine the number of continuing education credit hours that will be a assigned to the meeting.  sanitarians in West Virginia are required to obtain fifteen (15) continuing education credit hours every year.

Scheduled Board meeting dates are: 

  • March 7, 2013
  • June 13, 2013
  • September 12, 2013
  • December 6, 2013

All Board meetings are held at 10:00 AM in the Board Room, Kanawha-Charleston Health Department, 108 Lee Street East, Charleston, WV  25301.  Board meetings are open to Sanitarians and the public.
