Water Well Driller Certification & Pump Installer Certification

New Rules and Regulations, affective April 2, 2008, establish different levels of certification.  All current certified WV Water Well Drillers will be grandfathered under the new requirements if the appropriate form is completed and fees submitted.  After the grandfathering period, new drillers entering the system will follow the certification guidelines below.

Master Well Driller

Drill construct, alter and abandon water wells.

Install or replace well pumping equipment.

Perform yield and drawdown tests.

Supervise Journeymen and Apprentices.

Sign permit applications and completion reports.

 

3 years (4,500 hours) relevant experience as a Journeyman.

 

Category test to attempt in the following categories: (1) Cable Tool Drilling in Unconsolidated Material, (2) Cable Tool Drilling in Rock Materials, (3) Air Rotary in Unconsolidated Materials, (4) Air rotary in Rock Materials, (5) Mud Rotary Drilling in Unconsolidated Materials, (6) Mud Rotary Drilling in Rock Materials.
Journeyman Well Driller

Drill, construct, alter or abandon water wells, except public wells without supervision.

Install or replace pumps and pumping systems.

Perform yield and drawdown testing.

Supervise apprentices.

Cannot sign permit applications or completion reports.

 

2 years (3,000 hours) relevant experience as an apprentice. 1. WV General Exam

2.  National Groundwater Association General Drilling Exam.

Apprentice Well Driller May only run a driller with on-site supervision by a Journeyman or Master;

May only install pumps with on-site supervision by a certified pump installer.

 

Gaining on the job experience. No Exam
Pump Installer

Install or replace pumps and pumping equipment.

Perform yield and drawdown testing.

Supervise work of an apprentice

 

2 years (1,000 hours) relevant experience as an apprentice under the supervision of a pump installer, master well driller, or journeyman.

 

National Ground Water Pump Exam
Apprentice Pump Installer May only install pumps with on-site supervision by a certified pump installer.

 

Gaining on the job experience. No Exam
