Cleaning and protecting the nation’s water is an enormous task. The United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Wastewater Management (OWM) oversees a range of programs contributing to the well-being of the nation’s waters and watersheds. Through its programs and initiatives, OWM promotes compliance with the requirements of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act.Under the Clean Water Act, OWM works in partnership with Environment Protection Agency (EPA) regions, states and tribes to regulate discharges into surface waters such as wetlands, lakes, rivers, estuaries, bays and oceans. Specifically, OWM focuses on control of water that is collected in discrete conveyances (also called point sources), including pipes, ditches, and sanitary or storm sewers. OWM is also home to the Clean Water State Revolving Fund, the largest water quality funding source, focused on funding wastewater treatment systems, nonpoint source projects and estuary protection.
