| For more information contact: Joe Thornton For immediate release CDC and DHHR recommend suspension of third and fourth doses of vaccine The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in conjunction with the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, Bureau for Public Health, has issued a recommendation to temporarily suspend use of the third and fourth doses of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7), currently marketed as Prevnar. However, children at increased risk of severe disease, such as sickle cell anemia or immune system disorders, should continue to receive the full regimen of four doses. This action was taken because of the limited supply of vaccine available nationwide and will remain in effect until the manufacturer can restore quantities to the necessary levels to meet the demands of the four-dose series. According to the CDC, the production of Prevnar has been much less than expected and shipments of the vaccine have been delayed, resulting in vaccine shortages. It is estimated the shortages will continue into, and possibly beyond, the summer months. Children who do not receive their recommended third and fourth doses because of the shortage, should resume their vaccination schedule on their first visit to a health care provider once vaccine levels return to normal. The vaccine is designed to prevent serious diseases such as meningitis and certain blood infections. These diseases can cause serious illness, including death. The vaccine is not routinely recommended for children more than 2 years of age and children under 2 are considered at highest risk for developing complications from the diseases associated with pneumococcal infection. – 30 – |
