| For more information contact: Joe Thornton For immediate release State diabetes program receives funding for prevention and control The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, Bureau for Public Health, Diabetes Prevention and Control Program has been awarded a federal grant of $859,872. The money will aid the state in continuing diabetes control and prevention methods that will assist residents of West Virginia avoid serious diabetes related complications - such as blindness, lower-limb amputations and kidney failure. All 50 states, the District of Columbia and eight U.S. territories received grant money ranging from $400,000 to nearly $ 1 million. Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and West Virginia and costs about $132 billion a year nationally in direct and indirect costs. From 1994-98, West Virginia lead all other states with a 98.3 per 100,000 population for deaths associated with diabetes complications.
