Bureau for Child Support Enforcement receives positive numbers in Federal evaluation

The Bureau for Child Support Enforcement has exceeded last year’s performance in the establishment and collection of child support obligations.  In a recent review of federal performance standards it was noted that more than 94 percent of the children in the bureau’s caseload had paternity established, and 83.54 percent of the cases had a support order in place.  Because the bureau exceeds the federal benchmark for these standards, the bureau will receive additional federal funding for its activities.

In 2004 West Virginia’s Bureau for Child Support Enforcement ranked 13th in the country in the percentage of current support that they were able to collect and distribute.  2005 collections rose to a new high of $178 million, which is approximately $13 million more than the 2004 collection figure. “Because statistics are still being compiled from other states it is too early to tell whether we have improved our national ranking, but our goal is to make child support a reliable source of income for the families in this state who depend upon it to meet basic needs.  Until every dollar that is owed is collected, we will continue to work hard for these families,” said Bureau Commissioner Susan Perry.
