WEST VIRGINIA COALITION FOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Walk Across West Virginia

Each year the West Virginia Coalition for Physical Activity coordinates Walk Across West Virginia (WAWV), a statewide physical activity campaign. The event has grown steadily since its beginning, with over 6300 participants logging over 121,000 miles in 1997. The event is not a point-to-point event, but is designed so it can be held anywhere there is a place to walk. Participants (individuals or groups) attempt to walk a distance equal to one of several routes across the state. A milage log is provided, so they can track their progress across the state. The beauty of WAWV is that you can use your creativity to implement it any way you like. The event can be tailored to meet your needs.

  • It can be a one day or multi-day event. The goal is to encourage persons to develop a routine of physical activity.
  • It can be before, at lunch, after school or work or anytime.
  • Use the WAWV as "social/special time" with friends and families.
  • Teams and challenges can be offered.
  • It can have a group kickoff on the weekend and accumulate what participants do by themselves during the week.
  • Local sponsors can be solicited.
  • Certificates for individuals and groups are available as part of the program packet.

These are just a few examples of ways to generate ethusiasm and bring recognition to your walk. You may want to coordinate with other community groups in your town to make is a city wide activity.

We have developed an on-line packet of information to assist in your efforts. It includes mileage charts, maps and graphics.
