West Virginia Vital Statistics

Records of all births, deaths, marriages, divorces, fetal deaths, and ITOPs are collected and maintained by the HSC's Vital Registration Office.  These vital records are analyzed in order to track demographic trends and identify characteristics of births and deaths in West Virginia.  This information is made available for planning and policy purposes.

West Virginia's vital records collection started in 1917.  In 1921, state law required counties to submit birth and death data (until then, submission was optional.) Starting in 1925, West Virginia's registration of births and deaths were deemed sufficiently complete for inclusion in the National Vital Statistics System.
