Resource Description: Adverse childhood experiences vs adult behavioral risk factors. This statistical brief reviews the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences reported by West Virginia adults in 2014. Adverse childhood experiences ACE include substance abuse, separation/divorce, mental illness, domestic violence, incarceration, verbal abuse, physical abuse, and sexual abuse. Research conducted by CDC has found that individuals who experience three or more ACE are at greater risk for engaging in several risk behaviors and developing chronic diseases in adulthood. This brief further investigates these relationships among the West Virginia adult population.
