| As the state's
chief health official, the Commissioner of the Bureau for Public Health
sets public health policy and directs public health activities within
the state to fulfill essential population-based functions, that include:

The assessment of the state's
health status and available resources policy development resulting
in proposals to support and encourage better health assurance that
needed services are available, accessible and of acceptable quality

The Commissioner oversees
all activities of the Bureau's eight offices and is authorized and/or
mandated by law to carry out specific duties relating to the health
of the state's citizens. These include intervention in such times
as that health would be threatened, as in disease outbreaks, disasters
and legal disputes. The Commissioner approves appointments of all
county health officers and serves as acting county health officer
during such temporary periods as a county may not have an appointed
officer. The Commissioner also serves as Executive Secretary of the
state Board of Medicine and generally oversees the Board of Barbers
and Cosmetologists, Board of Chiropractic Examiners and Board of Hearing
Aid Dealers.
