WV Birth to Three is pleased to announce the September 2013 Webinar schedule!

Orientation to WV Birth to Three
(3 Contact Hours)

This webinar is designed for individuals who are considering enrolling in WV Birth to Three.  Participants will learn the legal and philosophical foundations of Part C of IDEA, how early intervention is implemented in West Virginia, and expectations for practitioners providing services within WV Birth to Three. The training includes an overview of family centered services, the IFSP process, procedural safeguards (family rights), required system components, personnel standards, and enrollment procedures.

Individuals who are currently enrolled in WV Birth to Three are not permitted to retake Orientation to WV Birth to Three.

Going Beyond Evaluation- Moving to Authentic Assessment

As our knowledge and understanding of infant and toddler development has increased, we know that all areas of development are integrated and cannot be assessed in isolation from the child’s daily activities and routines where the child uses these skills. This webinar will provide information on the when, what and how of using authentic assessment practices to gather information that is child/family focused and linked to meaningful IFSP outcomes and intervention strategies.

Research tells us that children who experience on-going violence in the home may have difficulties with concentration, learning, emotions, and developing healthy relationships. Caregivers who are victims of violence may experience depression, loss of self esteem, and other issues which have an impact on how they are able to meet their children’s needs. As early interventionists, we can recognize the signs of domestic violence and help prevent or intervene to reduce its impact on children and offer resources to their caregivers.

Please join us as Laurie Thompsen, from the WV Coalition Against Domestic Violence provides an overview of domestic violence, its impacts, resources and opportunities for additional training and support in the future.

Creating Participation Based IFSP Outcomes

The Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) represents a collaborative partnership between the family and early intervention team. This partnership begins during initial conversations with the family at Intake, incorporating the information gathered as part of the evaluation and assessment process and ends with a decision as to how early intervention can help the child and family.  This webinar will focus on how to write meaningful, participation based outcomes that support the family’s hopes and dreams for their child and family within the context of the family’s daily activities and routines.

Transition Training (3 Contact Hours)

On July 1, 2012, WV Birth to Three in collaboration with the WV Department of Education began implementing revised policies and procedures to meet the new Federal Regulations under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA, 2004) for the transition of children from Part C to Part B or other needed services.

This webinar will provide practitioners and service coordinators an overview of the new components for transition including; revised transition timelines and activities, required documentation, review of revised forms, and discussion of strategies to support children and families in a smooth, seamless transition to appropriate services and supports at age three.

Child Outcome Summary Form (COSF)

Participants will learn the background for the current emphasis on outcomes measurement in early childhood and specifically under Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).  Participants will also gain increased understanding of the purpose of an outcomes measurement system, and the purpose and use of the Child Outcome Summary Form (COSF) as it relates to measuring individual child progress and the WV Birth to Three System’s ability to achieve broader systemic outcomes for individual children and families.

Practitioner Community of Practice Series

What is a Community of Practice?  A  Community of Practice is designed to provide a framework for WV Birth to Three practitioners from across the state to share information, skills and knowledge. 

What happens in a Community of Practice?  Members of the Community of Practice learn together through topical webinars and readings, sharing knowledge and experiences, reflecting on their own knowledge and skills, and supporting each other in making changes to evidenced based practices.

This first Community of Practice will be an opportunity for practitioners to share ideas and to plan next steps.  If you are new to Birth to Three and in need of a way to learn from other practitioners or been with us for years and want a forum to share ideas and support others, please join us for this planning webinar. All you need to do is sign up for the Community of Practice for your discipline or profession.  If you do not see your discipline or profession, please look in the upcoming months.
