"Helping our citizens to help themselves"

Most people who are coping with the aftermath of a disaster have normal reactions as they struggle with the disruption and loss caused by the disaster. The vast majority of those affected will be people experiencing a normal reaction to an abnormal event.

The emotional impact of traumatic events can have devastating effects on the mental well-being of individuals of all ages. For many of us, it is easy to focus all of our energies on helping other people or on maintaining our daily schedules and routines.

Although these efforts deserve our attention, it is important to remember to take care of yourself and to monitor your own emotions during difficult times. Tending to your own mental health and emotional well-being will make you a better, more reliable resource for friends and family members during their times of need.
