PROJECT RECOVERY, CRISIS COUNSELING PROGRAM
West Virginia, U.S.A

A little about our program: The Project Recovery Crisis Counseling Program was created in August 2001, following the severe flooding that plagued southern West Virginia in May - July of that year. On June 3, nine counties were designated in a Presidential Disaster Declaration.

Project Recovery is funded by grants from FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) and works in association with the Center for Mental Health Services.

Project Recovery II followed closely behind as the floods once again returned to southern West Virginia in May of 2002. After another declaration, Project Recovery II was formed to serve in four southern counties. The unique aspect of Project Recovery II was a team totally devoted to students and children. They worked in every public and private school in McDowell County, offering information, referrals and stress management.

Project Recovery III was established in June of 2003, for the six counties that experienced flooding that summer. Major flooding returned to West Virginia in November of 2003, this time affecting some 23 counties. Project Recovery IV began serving 23 affected counties in the Immediate Services Program. The Regular Services Program began on March 30, and the counties served dropped from 23 to 7.

In June 2004 floods came again to Logan, Mingo and Wyoming counties in southern West Virginia This brought about the creation of Project Recovery V, a program that covers three counties in southern West Virginia

In the aftermath of hurricane Ivan, northern and western West Virginia flooded in September of 2004. This resulted in the formation of Project Recovery VI, serving a total of five counties in the northern panhandle region of the state.
